Communities
Our community water projects are focused in rural areas of Malawi where access to fresh, clean water presents a major challenge.
Many Malawians still rely on shallow hand-dug wells, surface water bodies, or streams that are contaminated with bacteria, parasites, or toxic chemicals for drinking, bathing and laundry.
We begin with the need for community access to fresh, clean water.
Community-Driven Approach
This approach emphasizes local ownership, collaboration, and sustainability by actively involving community members in every stage of the process, from decision-making to the implementation and ongoing maintenance of water and sanitation infrastructure.
By giving communities a voice, it fosters a sense of responsibility and accountability, ensuring that solutions are not only tailored to local needs but are also more likely to be maintained and supported in the long run. This holistic method strengthens community resilience, enhances local capacities, and ensures that the solutions implemented are both environmentally and socially sustainable.
Implementation
After working together to sensitize the community, the Freshwater technical team oversees the implementation of the entire project.
Geo Site Survey
Our technical team performs a geological site survey to determine the best locations to drill for water.
Drilling
Professional drillers are sub-contracted to source fresh ground water at least 45 meters below the surface.
Well Casing & Testing
After water is accessed, the piping is installed and the borehole is blown and cleaned. Then a pump test determines well yield or capacity and a water quality test is also performed.
Civil Works
The hand pump is installed and a concrete drainage apron is constructed.
Freshwater!
After the apron cures, the new well is ready to use. The community now has access to fresh, clean water!
Community Handover Celebration
Community members celebrate the official transfer of ownership of the water point with traditional music, dance and speeches from local leaders symbolizing their unity and commitment to maintaining this vital resource for improved health and well-being.
