Health Centers
In Malawi, 24% of healthcare facilities lack reliable water systems.
Imagine a health center without clean water or safe sanitation—doctors and nurses struggle to provide hygienic care, putting countless lives at risk.
At Freshwater, we are committed to changing this. Through partnerships, we strengthen healthcare systems and empower communities to deliver better care.
In Zomba District, we upgraded WASH systems in 100% of government health centers. These improvements are life-saving—clean water is essential, and with it, lives are saved every day.
Now, we’re expanding this approach to more districts, with new partners by our side.
Empowering Maternal Healthcare
By equipping healthcare facilities with clean water, proper sanitation, and essential hygiene practices, we empower mothers to give birth in safer, healthier environments. This critical support dramatically reduces the risk of life-threatening infections and complications that arise from unsanitary conditions, ensuring better health outcomes for both mothers and their newborns.
Freshwater Project International plays a vital role in safeguarding the lives of mothers and infants, strengthening the foundation of thriving, resilient communities.
Program Components
Technical/Social Baseline Needs Assessments
Our assessments gather data on the existing water and sanitation conditions, community demographics, and social dynamics to identify the specific needs and priorities of the population.
Technical Design of WASH Systems
This involves creating detailed engineering plans for water supply, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) systems, ensuring they meet both technical specifications and the community's needs.
Water Source Development
This process focuses on identifying, developing, and securing reliable water sources, such as boreholes or springs, to provide safe and sustainable water access for the community.
Project Implementation Management
Effective management of the project execution phase ensures that all activities are carried out on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with the project's objectives.
Preventative Care & Maintenance Training
This training equips community members with the knowledge and skills needed to perform regular maintenance and minor repairs on WASH systems, promoting sustainability and longevity.
Creation of Complete Technical Manual
A comprehensive technical manual serves as a resource for the DHO and systems operators, detailing the design, operation, and maintenance of the WASH systems.
Quality Control & Inspection
This involves regular assessments to ensure that all installations and materials meet established quality standards, thereby guaranteeing the effectiveness and safety of the WASH systems.
On-Demand Inspection and Maintenance
Providing on-demand services for inspection and maintenance ensures that any issues with the WASH systems are promptly addressed, minimizing downtime and maintaining reliable access to water and sanitation services.
