In the heart of Zomba, Malawi, Lambulira Health Centre in Zomba, Malawi, has emerged as a beacon of resilience amid water challenges, a common issue in 24% of healthcare facilities in Malawi lacking functional water supply. The health centre, which serves a catchment area of 36,668 people across 113 villages, has long struggled with erratic water supply, dilapidated sanitary facilities, and corroded pipelines. Yet, amidst these challenges, a glimmer of hope emerged.
However, a collaborative intervention by Freshwater Project International, Xylem, and Engineers Without Borders (EWB) USA - UCLA Chapter has turned the tide, significantly improving healthcare delivery and community health outcomes.
From October to December 2022, the Lambulira Rural Health Care Facility WASH Services Rehabilitation Project was in full swing. With precision and dedication, they replaced faulty pumps, laid new HDPE pipes, and constructed state-of-the-art WASH fixtures. But it wasn't just about infrastructure; it was about empowering the community. Through training and engagement, they instilled a sense of ownership among staff and villagers alike.
